This was not a trip I had originally planned to take by bus. I had been scheduled to travel from A Coruña to Barcelona on the train, but at the last minute my train was cancelled. When I went looking for other options, I found that most everything else was already sold out. In the end, the only other option that I had was a long-distance ALSA bus. I knew that it was going to be a long trip, but sometimes you have to take what’s available and hope for the best.

The route from A Coruña to Barcelona spans approximately 894 kilometers, passing through most of northern Spain from the north-west to the north-east.
Long-distance bus services, such as those offered by ALSA, are available to make the journey between the two cities, although the journey takes significantly longer than by train or plane. The fastest bus services take approximately 11 hours to make the journey, although the average journey takes about 17 hours, depending on the service and the number of stops made along the route.
I boarded the ALSA bus in A Coruña, and I knew that this trip was going to be a long one. Once we were outside the city, the trip took on the pace that is characteristic of long bus rides.
We traveled through different regions in Spain during the course of our trip. We went through different cities and made a few stops during our trip. After a few hours, everything starts looking the same: highways, gas stations, and so on.
The journey started at Estación de Autobuses de A Coruña, the city's primary bus station.
It's a small station, and it's not difficult to get around in it, especially if you are taking a long-distance bus, as they normally leave from clearly marked stands.
The bus would eventually arrive at its final destination, normally at Estació del Nord, as it's one of the primary stations in the city.
From there, it's not difficult to get to the rest of the city via the metro, taxi, or local buses.
schedule_and_frequency_body There are only a few daily departures from A Coruña to Barcelona, normally around four daily departures.
Given the long duration of the journey, it's not surprising that there are overnight departures, allowing the traveler to sleep during part of the trip.

The ALSA coach was comfortable enough for a bus, with reclining seats and space for luggage to be stored underneath.
However, a journey of more than ten hours inevitably begins to feel long. Even with breaks along the way, spending most of the day on a bus is not exactly relaxing.
Long-distance bus tickets for this route are not cheap, especially when booking at short notice. The cheapest tickets cost about €100, although the average price tends to be more in the region of €110. Here’s roughly what my trip looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €110 |
| Food & drinks | €12 |
| Travel to departure station | €2 |
| Travel from arrival station | €3 |
| Total | € 127 |
Taking the bus from A Coruña to Barcelona is certainly not the fastest way to get across Spain, and I wouldn’t normally recommend it.
In my particular case, I had to take the bus as a result of my train being cancelled and having no other options available. The trip was long and tiring, although I did eventually make my way from Galicia to Barcelona when all other options were no longer available.
