A Coruña to Bilbao by busA Coruña to Bilbao by Bus: A Long Ride for a Concert Weekend

By Estefanía Ojea

Estefanía OjeaContent Editor and Travel Writer
Estefanía Ojea
Estefanía Ojea is a content editor and travel writer who has been working in digital writing since 2011 and focusing on travel content since 2020. Based in Galicia, Spain, she enjoys exploring cities slowly and seeking out unusual places such as historic cemeteries, curious churches, and the occasional slightly macabre landmark. She is particularly fond of train travel as a way to discover new destinations across Europe.

This bus trip from A Coruña to Bilbao began with a rather simple idea: my group of friends and I were going there for a concert, and the easiest way for us all to travel together was by bus.

Although it was not the quickest way of traveling, since we were all traveling in a group, we were not in a hurry, and we were willing to make the extra time on the road. Finally, we decided on an ALSA bus, since we were aware it was going to be a rather long trip through northern Spain.

Route overview

The distance between A Coruña and Bilbao is around 500 km, connecting the region of Galicia with the region of the Basque Country in northern Spain.

There are several bus routes available for this route, although it has to be said that some are quicker, while others make stops along the way in cities such as Valladolid, thus extending the travel time. In our case, the bus we took was one of the longer ones. The travel time was around nine hours.

Transportation experience

We boarded the ALSA bus in A Coruña and settled in for what we already knew would be a long ride.

The bus traveled inland and passed through Valladolid, which added time to the journey but also broke the trip into different stages. Since we were traveling with friends, the hours didn’t feel quite as long as they might have otherwise.

Long bus journeys always have a similar rhythm: a few conversations, some music, a short stop along the way, and then back on the road again.

Departure station

The journey began at Estación de Autobuses de A Coruña, the city’s main bus terminal.

The station is easy to navigate, and long-distance buses usually depart from clearly marked platforms.

Arrival station

The bus eventually arrived at Bilbao Intermodal, the main bus station serving the city.

The terminal is well connected to Bilbao’s metro, tram, and local buses, which makes it easy to reach the city center from there.

Schedule & frequency

Buses between A Coruña and Bilbao run regularly, although the exact travel time can vary depending on the route and intermediate stops.

Some services are faster and more direct, while others take longer routes through cities such as Valladolid.

Onboard experience & services

The ALSA bus itself was quite comfortable for a long-distance trip, with reclining seats and luggage storage underneath the bus.

While nine hours on a bus is a long time, the trip was made easier with the company of my friends. We chatted and listened to music as we made our slow way across northern Spain.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Ticket prices for long-distance buses vary depending on availability and when you book. Here’s roughly what my trip looked like:

ItemCost (eur)

Top tips & recommendations

  • Also, look at the different bus routes as some are faster than others.
  • Traveling with friends can make the journey look shorter.
  • Carry snacks and water with you as you travel.
  • Taking the night bus can also save on time; however, make sure the hotel opens early.
  • If you arrive very early in the morning, you may have to wait before checking into your hotel.

Conclusion

In this case, the bus that was available to book arrived at five in the morning, which was not as convenient as one would have liked because one would have to wait around before checking into the hotel.

If one is planning to make the same trip, one could consider the arrival times. It is not always the case that the fastest or the cheapest bus is the one that is the most comfortable if one has to wait around before checking into the hotel.
