Paris and the cathedral city of Chartres are only 90 kilometers apart, so flying isn't generally an option for people traveling in France between these two cities. There are also no intercity coach links between the French capital and Chartres. However, there are excellent rail connections between the two cities and the journey will take around an hour at any time of day, making it ideal for day trips. Be aware that all trains leave from Montparnasse in the south of the city, so if you are staying in the northern suburbs, leave plenty of time to make the journey across Paris.
Return trips from Chartres to Paris are also available.
There are no scheduled intercity bus services between Paris and Chartres. However, is is possible to take airport transfer buses between Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Chartres Airport, and there are usually tourist buses to the cathedral in the summer months.
Because they are fast, comfortable and reliable, trains from Paris to Chartres are easily the best option for any travelers journeying between these two cities. SNCF trains depart from Paris as early as 7:40 a.m., and take just over 1 hour 10 minutes to reach Chartres station. There are plenty of departure times every day, with one train every hour until late in the evening. All train services to Chartres leave from Paris' Gare Montparnasse. To get there from the center of town, you'll need to take Metro lines 4 or 12 (give yourself 20 minutes to make the journey). If you are coming from Charles de Gaulle airport, it is a good idea to take the Air France coach, which stops directly outside the station.
