Traveling from Venice to Split by ferry feels like stepping into a slower, more cinematic version of Europe. Instead of rushing through airports and busy highways, you cross the Adriatic Sea and watch Italy fade into the distance while Croatia slowly appears on the horizon. For me it was the ideal summer vacation!

Venice and the beautiful views from the Canals.
The ferry from Venice to Split takes between 6 and 12 hours depending on the service, covering roughly 390 kilometers (242 miles) across the Adriatic Sea. Most ferries depart from Venice San Basilio or Marittima and arrive at Split Ferry Port. Note that traveling by ferry saves you a night’s hotel!
I booked my ferry ticket through Omio like I always do, and it made the planning process much easier than I expected. Being able to compare departure times, durations, and ferry types in one place helped me choose a daytime sailing that felt more like a scenic experience than just transportation.
Venice’s ferry terminals are well organized but spread out, so I made sure to arrive early and follow the signs toward my dock. Once there, boarding was smooth and clearly managed and loading the car was very simple too.
I chose a day trip to enjoy the sea breeze and read outside on the deck, but arriving in Split is unforgettable too. The ferry docks right near the old town, and within minutes you’re surrounded by Roman walls, palm trees, and seaside cafés (if you are a Game of Thrones fan you will recognize many locations from the famous series).
Ferries do not run daily year-round, but during the high season there are several weekly departures, with more options in summer that fit perfectly with my travel schedule.
The ferry was comfortable, with both indoor seating and open decks. Watching the Adriatic sea going by peacefully was easily the highlight of the journey.
I paid around €80 for my ticket (standard chair + small car), with prices usually ranging between €60 and €120 depending on season and cabin type.
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €80 |
| Food & drinks | €15 |
| Travel to departure station | €3 |
