For a period of time, I was actually living in Berlin, and when I would go back to Galicia, I would often fly into Porto. Of course, flights didn’t always work out so that I could get into Porto, and sometimes the best price would be to fly into Lisbon instead. When that happened, I would often take the bus up to Porto. If I had a little time, I might go into the city and have a coffee before leaving, but often I would just head for the bus station. Many times, I would take the evening buses, which was partly because it was more convenient and partly because I could sleep on the bus ride, which is helpful since I do tend to get motion sickness on buses.

The distance between Lisbon and Porto is approximately 310 kilometers, and it links the two largest cities in Portugal. There are a number of operators that offer this route, but Rede Expressos is one of the most frequent ones. The journey takes slightly more than three hours, depending on traffic and the number of stops that are made along the way. There are some routes that make short stops in cities such as Leiria and Coimbra, which are approximately halfway between Lisbon and Porto.

Transportation experience

Most of the times I made this journey, I traveled with Rede Expressos. The buses typically depart from Lisbon and shortly thereafter merge with the highway leading north. Once the outskirts of the city are left behind, the journey becomes fairly regular. Depending on the route, the bus will stop for a brief moment in towns such as Leiria or Coimbra, where a handful of people will get on or off. Since I have a tendency towards motion sickness, traveling at night actually proved to be beneficial for me. Once the bus was underway, I would typically drift off to sleep for the majority of the ride and awaken shortly before arriving in Porto.

Departure station

Most of the buses that go from Lisbon to Porto leave from Sete Rios Bus Station, which is one of the main terminals for long-distance buses in the city. The bus station is easy to access thanks to the metro system in Lisbon, which stops right outside the terminal. If you are arriving from the airport, the metro link makes the transfer relatively easy.

Arrival station

When arriving in Porto, buses will normally terminate at Campanhã Bus Terminal, which is near the Porto Campanhã railway station. From there, you can continue into the city using the metro, trains, taxis, or buses. The city center is also close.

Schedule & frequency

There are frequent buses throughout the day from Lisbon to Porto. There are departures from early morning until late evening, which makes the journey flexible if you want to travel during the day or later in the night.

My journey with Flixbus from Lisbon to Porto was a mixed experience. The online booking and reservation went smoothly and the ticket was available quickly. The bus, number 1205, left on time at 9:00 am. My seat was comfortable, however there was no power socket and the wifi did not work. The driver, João, was friendly and informed us about the route. However, during the journey it got very noisy, your group of passengers were partying. João endeavoured to make it quiet, but it didn't help much. The toilets were clean, but there was no catering on board. The journey took 3 hours and we arrived in Porto on time. The value for money was okay, but the noisy atmosphere and lack of wifi wiped out the experience

The Flixbus left Lisbon at 9am and arrived in Porto at 12.15pm. The route was number 1000 and I had seat 4D. The seat next to me was empty. That was very comfortable. The bus was very modern and new. There were no bad odours in the bus. The driver and staff were very friendly. There were sockets on the bus where I could charge my mobile phone. I would definitely take the bus again, even if it is a bit slower than a flight. The price is simply unbeatable.
