I normally travel from A Coruña to Ourense by train, but during one of my recent journeys, there were rail works on the route. The temporary train station was not so close to the normal one, and that made the whole trip less convenient. So, I decided to travel by bus. It is not my preferred way to travel on that route, but in this case, it was the easiest way.

River view A Coruña to Ourense
The distance between A Coruña and Ourense via the inland area of Galicia is approximately 170 km. There are regular bus services between the two cities. Typically, the bus leaves from the bus station in A Coruña and arrives at the intermodal station in Ourense, which includes train and bus facilities. The bus journey from A Coruña to Ourense takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
I took the Monbus service from A Coruña Bus Station, mostly because of the works on the railway and the fact that the temporary train route was less convenient than usual. Once you hit the road, the route is quite simple. The bus takes you inland, away from the sea, and the scenery becomes progressively less populated as you get closer to Ourense. It is not a complicated route, although it does feel like a slightly longer journey than the train route. Additionally, the bus does not travel every day on this route, so it is worth checking the timetable in advance. Another option, aside from the train, is BlaBlaCar, which is quite popular for this route as well.
The starting point of the bus route is Estación de Autobuses de A Coruña. This is a major bus station in the city. The location of this bus station is close to Cuatro Caminos. This makes it easy to access this bus station from all over the city. There are many local bus routes that stop close to this station, like 1A, 4, and 14. This makes it easy to get to this station with minimal planning required.
The bus arrives at the Ourense Intermodal Station, which brings together the services of the train and the bus in the same place. This is very practical if you want to continue your journey, as you will be able to take the train, and in my case, I take the regional train from there. In the bus station, there are connections to other destinations in Galicia, offered by Monbus, and to different destinations in Spain, offered by ALSA, so it works like a small transportation center.
The bus services from A Coruña to Ourense are scarce. To be specific, the bus service that I have found so far only operates on Fridays at 21:30. Thus, it is evident that it is not a bus service that operates too frequently. The bus journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Thus, it is a slower mode of transportation compared to the train.
The buses on this route are standard regional coaches with Wi-Fi on board and space for luggage underneath. It’s a fairly quiet route, so it’s not usually crowded and you can normally find a seat without booking far in advance. For a journey of a couple of hours, it’s comfortable enough, although it does feel noticeably slower than taking the train.
The cost of a bus ticket on this route is €17.
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €17 |
| Food & drinks | €2 |
| Travel to departure station | €0 |
| Travel from arrival station | €0 |
| Total | € 19 |
The bus worked well in this case, although it wouldn’t be my first option for this route. Under normal circumstances, I would still recommend taking the train because it’s faster and more direct, with only one stop in Santiago de Compostela before arriving in Ourense.
