No trip to Sweden is complete without visiting both Stockholm and Gothenburg, two cities known for their beautiful architecture, cozy cafés perfect for a classic fika break, and long summer evenings in their respective archipelagos. Getting between the two is fast and convenient, with regular high-speed trains connecting them multiple times daily in about 3 hours.

The route from Stockholm to Gothenburg covers about 400 kilometers, with the two cities located on opposite coasts of Sweden. The train takes around 3 to 3.5 hours, with slower but cheaper bus options also available. Flights exist as well, but I don’t recommend them since both airports are far from their respective city centers. To see and compare all Stockholm to Gothenburg travel options, check out Omio’s handy overview page.
Trains depart from Stockholm Central Station, just across the bridge from the iconic Gamla Stan neighborhood. Tickets must be purchased online and can be easily done on Omio, as there are no physical ticket counters for SJ anymore. No formal check-in is required. Just check the departure board, find your reserved seat, and relax. The trip to Gothenburg takes just over three hours, with beautiful lake views toward the end of the journey. All trains on the route offer free Wi-Fi, although the signal can be quite spotty at times, as much of the journey goes through dense forest. There are also no luggage restrictions, so you can generally bring as much as you can reasonably carry by yourself. No need to worry about baggage allowances like on airplanes.
All trains depart from Stockholm Central Station, a historic terminal with a food court, supermarket, shops, and plenty of seating. The station is heated during those cold Swedish winter months.
Trains from Stockholm to Gothenburg arrive at Gothenburg Central Station, which is also centrally located. You'll arrive right next to Kungsparken, one of the city's most famous parks.
There are usually one to two high-speed trains per hour, taking 3 hours to 3 hours and 30 minutes, depending on the stops. SJ operates the fastest trains, the X2000 tilting high-speed trains. VR (formerly MTRX) also runs multiple services daily. These trains are slightly slower but often cheaper, making them a great option for budget-conscious travelers. SJ also offers slower regional trains, which take longer and are only worth considering when prices on faster services are high.
Stockholm Central is a bustling hub for trains and public transport across Sweden. My SJ X2000 train was already waiting at the platform when I arrived. All tickets come with a seat reservation. I traveled in First Class, which I found offered a spacious and comfortable seat. Upon boarding, I quickly found my seat toward the front of the train. Also offered onboard are two Second Class seating options: Regular and Lugn. Lugn is the quiet carriage. This is a great choice if you’d like to nap or enjoy a peaceful, undisturbed journey. The Regular (Second Class) is very comfortable overall, featuring seats very similar to First Class, just slightly narrower with a bit less legroom. A bistro car in the middle of the train sells pre-packaged meals, sandwiches, and hot or cold drinks. There are microwaves available to heat your meal as well, whether it’s from the bistro or your own takeaway. In First Class, passengers get self-service complimentary tea, coffee, and fruit, and you can pre-order a full meal to be served at your seat. I ordered the tasty and fresh meat option, which was a small 3-course lunch served on one tray. SJ’s X2000 trains reach speeds of up to 200 km/h, using tilting technology to maintain high speeds on curvy tracks. However, this tilting motion can cause motion sickness for some travelers. If you’re sensitive to motion, consider choosing a VR train, as these do not tilt. In the final 45 minutes, keep your eyes on the window when the train slows down to get around the scenic lakes. You’ll absolutely love the great views of the Swedish countryside. My train arrived two minutes early, completing the journey in exactly three hours. Fast, scenic, and easy.

The X2000 is a fantastic high-speed train that connects Stockholm and Gothenburg with ease. Thanks to competition from buses and VR's multiple services, fares remain affordable, especially if booked in advance on Omio. For comfort, speed, and scenery, taking Sweden's X2000 is simply the best way to travel from Stockholm to Gothenburg. Trevlig Resa!
