Information about the Shizuoka to Nagoya train route
The Shizuoka to Nagoya train route is a fast and convenient connection between two of central Japan's most important cities. Shizuoka Station (50 Kuroganecho, Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture 420-0851) sits at the heart of a prefecture famous for its tea plantations, coastal scenery, and, of course, its unmatched views of Mount Fuji. Nagoya Station (1-1-4 Meieki, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture 450-0002) is one of Japan's busiest rail hubs, serving as the gateway to a city known for its castle, distinctive food culture, and position as a manufacturing powerhouse.
The route runs along the Tokaido Shinkansen corridor, the same high-speed line that links Tokyo and Osaka, making this a straightforward and well-served connection. Travelers heading from Shizuoka to Nagoya will find that this is one of the most efficient ways to move between the two cities, with the bullet train cutting across the dramatic landscape of the Tokai region. Along the way, the route passes through lush river valleys, coastal plains, and mountain foothills, scenery that makes the journey worthwhile in its own right.
For travelers building a broader Japan itinerary, this connection fits naturally between Tokyo to the east and Kyoto or Osaka to the west. Shizuoka is a rewarding stop in its own right, offering access to the Nihondaira plateau, Miho no Matsubara pine grove, and Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. Nagoya, meanwhile, is often underestimated by first-time visitors but offers a full itinerary of its own, from Nagoya Castle to the Atsuta Shrine and the vibrant Sakae district.
We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you plan to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.
Shizuoka to Nagoya by train: what to expect on board
Boarding the Shinkansen at Shizuoka Station is a smooth experience. The Shinkansen platforms are clearly separated from the conventional rail platforms and are clearly marked in English. Ticket gates, coin lockers, and a small selection of station shops and kiosks are all available before you board, so it is worth arriving a few minutes early to pick up snacks or a drink for the journey.
Best seats for the view
The Shizuoka to Nagoya segment of the Tokaido Shinkansen passes through some genuinely scenic countryside, and seat selection can make a real difference to your experience:
- For views of Mount Fuji, sit on the right-hand side of the train (D or E window seats) when traveling from Shizuoka toward Nagoya. The mountain appears early in the journey before the train moves further west, so look out shortly after departure.
- For views of Suruga Bay and the Pacific coastline, the left-hand side (A or B window seats) offers glimpses of the ocean as the train passes through the coastal stretches near Shizuoka.
- On clear days between October and February, the combination of Mount Fuji views and crisp visibility makes this one of the most scenic short Shinkansen rides in Japan.
On-board comfort
Even on this relatively brief journey, the Shinkansen delivers the same high standard of comfort that the service is known for across Japan. Seats are well-cushioned and spacious in standard class, with a tray table, power socket on newer rolling stock, and a quiet, air-conditioned environment throughout. Green Car (first class) seating is available if you prefer extra legroom and a more peaceful atmosphere.
A trolley service passes through the carriages with drinks, snacks, and light meals. That said, picking up an ekiben (a traditional railway bento box) from one of the stalls inside Shizuoka Station before boarding is a highly recommended ritual, Shizuoka's local specialties, including sakura shrimp and fresh seafood from Suruga Bay, make for an excellent travel meal.
Best time of year to travel
- Spring (late March to early May): Cherry blossom season brings spectacular scenery along the route and in both cities. It is one of the busiest travel periods in Japan, so booking ahead is essential.
- Autumn (mid-October to late November): Cooler temperatures, vibrant foliage, and clear skies make this an ideal time for the journey. Mount Fuji views are particularly sharp at this time of year.
- Winter (December to February): The quietest and most affordable season. Snow-capped Mount Fuji sightings are at their most dramatic, and crowds are significantly reduced compared to peak periods.
- Summer (July to August): Warm and lively, with festivals in both Shizuoka and Nagoya. The Obon holiday period in mid-August is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year across Japan, plan and book well in advance if traveling then.
Getting to Nagoya and beyond
Nagoya Station is one of Japan's major Shinkansen interchange points and a highly efficient hub for onward travel in multiple directions. Whether you are continuing your journey west toward Kyoto and Osaka, heading north into the Japan Alps, or exploring the Chukyo region, connections from Nagoya are frequent and well organized.
Within Nagoya
The station connects directly to Nagoya's extensive subway network, with the Higashiyama Line and Sakuradori Line both departing from Nagoya Station. These lines reach the city's main attractions quickly, including Sakae (the central entertainment and shopping district), Fushimi, and Kanayama. The Meijo Line provides a loop around the city, connecting many of Nagoya's outer neighborhoods and landmarks. Buses and taxis are readily available outside the station's main exits for destinations not directly on the subway network.
Day trips and regional connections
Nagoya's location on the Tokaido Shinkansen makes it a practical base for exploring central Japan:
- Kyoto, a short Shinkansen hop to the west, making Nagoya a viable alternative base for visiting Kyoto without the higher accommodation prices.
- Osaka, easily reachable by Shinkansen, with a journey putting you into the heart of Kansai.
- Inuyama, a short trip north by the Meitetsu line, home to one of Japan's few original feudal castles and the scenic Kiso River gorge.
- Gifu, accessible by JR or Meitetsu, offering Gifu Castle, the Nagara River, and the famous cormorant fishing tradition.
- Takayama and the Japan Alps, the Hida Limited Express departs from Nagoya toward the mountain town of Takayama, a popular route for travelers seeking traditional inn culture and alpine scenery.
Your JR Pass remains valid for onward Shinkansen travel from Nagoya to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and beyond, making it a natural waypoint on a longer Japan journey.
What to expect when you arrive in Nagoya
Nagoya Station is one of Japan's most impressive transport complexes. The station building is anchored by twin skyscrapers, the JR Central Towers, which rise dramatically above the city's skyline and house hotels, offices, and a large shopping mall. Arriving here for the first time, the scale of the complex can feel overwhelming, but the layout is clearly marked in English and navigation becomes straightforward quickly.
Practical information at the station
- Tourist information: The Nagoya Tourist Information Office is located inside the station and provides city maps, transport guidance, and sightseeing recommendations in English and other languages. Staff are helpful and accustomed to assisting international visitors.
- Luggage storage: Coin lockers are plentiful throughout the station in a range of sizes. Luggage forwarding (takuhaibin) services are also available, allowing you to send larger bags directly to your hotel or onward destination, particularly useful if you plan to explore Nagoya before checking in.
- Currency and connectivity: ATMs accepting international cards are available within the station complex, with Japan Post and 7-Eleven ATMs being the most reliable for foreign cards. Free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the station building.
Arriving in Nagoya for the first time
Nagoya is a city that rewards visitors who take the time to look beyond its reputation as an industrial center. The city center is compact and easy to navigate, with many of the main attractions, Nagoya Castle, the Atsuta Shrine, the Noritake Garden, and the lively Osu shopping district, all reachable by subway within 15 to 20 minutes of the station.
Nagoya also has its own distinct food culture that sets it apart from other Japanese cities. Look out for miso katsu (pork cutlet with a rich red miso sauce), hitsumabushi (grilled eel served over rice with a variety of condiments), kishimen (flat wheat noodles), and ogura toast (thick toast with sweet red bean paste and butter), a local breakfast staple that has become something of a symbol of Nagoya café culture. Exploring the city's food scene is one of the best reasons to spend more than a single day here.
