The Shizuoka to Tokyo train route is a fast and convenient connection between one of Japan's most underrated regional cities and its bustling capital. Shizuoka Station (50 Kuroganecho, Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture 420-0851) sits right on the Tokaido Shinkansen line, making it exceptionally well-linked to Tokyo Station (1-9-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0005), one of Japan's most important transport hubs.
Shizuoka Prefecture is best known internationally as the home of Mount Fuji, but the city itself offers plenty of its own appeal: the historic Sunpu Castle ruins, the Shizuoka Sengen Shrine complex, and some of the finest green tea in Japan, grown in the rolling hills surrounding the city. The route to Tokyo passes through stunning scenery, including coastal views of Suruga Bay, the deepest bay in Japan, and, on clear days, dramatic perspectives of Mount Fuji that rival any viewpoint in the country.
The Tokaido Shinkansen is the main option for traveling this route, with both the Hikari and Kodama services stopping at Shizuoka Station. The faster Nozomi does not stop here, so planning around the Hikari is generally the smartest choice for travelers using a JR Pass, offering a solid balance of speed and convenience without needing to pay extra.
We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you plan to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.
Boarding the Shinkansen at Shizuoka Station is a smooth and well-organized experience. The station is clearly marked in both Japanese and English, and the Shinkansen platforms are separated from the local rail lines, so it is easy to find your way once you have passed through the ticket gates.
Seating options
The Tokaido Shinkansen offers a few different comfort levels to suit different budgets and preferences:
Best seats for the view
This route offers some of the most spectacular train scenery in Japan, and choosing the right seat makes a real difference:
On-board experience
As with all Shinkansen services, expect punctuality, cleanliness, and a quiet, orderly environment. A trolley service passes through the carriages offering drinks, snacks, and light meals. That said, picking up an ekiben (station bento box) at Shizuoka Station before boarding is highly recommended, the local options often feature regional specialties such as sakura ebi (cherry blossom shrimp) and wasabi-seasoned dishes that reflect the prefecture's food culture far better than anything you will find on the trolley.
Best time of year to travel
Tokyo Station is one of the most comprehensively connected transport hubs in the world, and arriving here puts virtually every corner of Japan, and the Tokyo metropolitan area, within easy reach.
Within Tokyo
Tokyo Station sits at the center of an enormous rail network. From within the station itself, you can connect directly to:
Day trips and regional connections
Tokyo Station is also the gateway to Japan's broader Shinkansen network, making it an ideal base for day trips or extended travel:
Your JR Pass remains valid across all JR lines within Tokyo and for onward Shinkansen travel, making Tokyo Station a highly practical hub for building a wider Japan itinerary.
Tokyo Station (1-9-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0005) is an extraordinary place in its own right. The western facade, the Marunouchi side, is a beautifully restored red-brick building dating from 1914, a striking contrast to the ultramodern city surrounding it. The eastern Yaesu side is more contemporary in feel and connects to a large underground shopping complex. Arriving here for the first time is genuinely impressive, and the scale of the station itself takes some getting used to.
Practical information at the station
Arriving in Tokyo for the first time
Tokyo can feel overwhelming on first arrival, but the city is far more navigable than its size suggests. The station's two main sides, Marunouchi (west, facing the Imperial Palace) and Yaesu (east, facing the business district), are useful reference points for orienting yourself. Most hotels in the central business districts of Marunouchi and Nihonbashi are within walking distance of the Marunouchi exits.
For first-time visitors, picking up a Suica or Pasmo IC card at the station is strongly recommended, these rechargeable smart cards work on virtually every train, subway, and bus in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and can also be used for purchases at convenience stores throughout the country. It is one of the single most useful things you can do on arrival to make getting around Tokyo simple and stress-free.
