Information about the Nagoya to Shizuoka train route

The train from Nagoya to Shizuoka is a smooth and well-traveled route along one of Japan's most important rail corridors, the Tokaido line. Connecting Nagoya Station (1-1-4 Meieki, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture 450-0002) with Shizuoka Station (50 Kuroganecho, Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture 420-0851), this route passes through the scenic heart of central Honshu, with glimpses of tea plantations, coastal landscapes, and, on a clear day, the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Fuji rising to the north.

The Tokaido Shinkansen is the fastest and most popular way to make this journey, with the Hikari and Kodama services stopping at Shizuoka Station. While the Nozomi is the fastest bullet train on this corridor, it does not stop at Shizuoka, so travelers using a JR Pass or looking to stop there specifically should opt for the Hikari or Kodama. For those in less of a hurry, the conventional JR Tokaido Line also connects the two cities and is a more affordable alternative, passing through smaller towns and offering a more relaxed, ground-level view of the region between Nagoya and Shizuoka.

Shizuoka itself is often overlooked by international visitors rushing between Tokyo and Osaka, but it deserves more attention. The city is the capital of Shizuoka Prefecture and is renowned across Japan for producing some of the country's finest green tea. The surrounding prefecture is also home to sections of the iconic Tokaido highway and some excellent hiking territory on the lower slopes of Mount Fuji.

We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you plan to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.

Nagoya to Shizuoka by train: what to expect on board

Whether you choose the Shinkansen or the conventional Tokaido Line, the journey from Nagoya to Shizuoka is a comfortable and rewarding one. Here is what to expect depending on your choice of train.

On the Shinkansen

The Tokaido Shinkansen platforms at Nagoya Station are located on the upper levels of the station and are clearly signposted in English. The bullet train experience here is everything you would expect, quiet, clean, punctual, and efficient. Seats are spacious, with generous legroom even in standard class, and the ride is exceptionally smooth throughout.

Best seats for the view

This stretch of the Tokaido Shinkansen is one of the best on the entire network for natural scenery, and seat choice makes a real difference:

  • For views of Mount Fuji, sit on the left-hand side of the train (A-side window seats) when traveling from Nagoya to Shizuoka. The mountain becomes visible as you approach Shizuoka from the west and is particularly dramatic in the final stretch of the journey.
  • For views of Suruga Bay and the Pacific coastline, the right-hand side (E-side window seats) offers occasional glimpses of the water as the train moves through the Shizuoka region.
  • The clearest Mount Fuji views tend to appear on morning trains when there is less atmospheric haze. Months between October and February offer the sharpest, snow-capped sightings.

On the conventional Tokaido Line

The local and rapid trains on the JR Tokaido Line offer a more leisurely alternative. Seats are less plush than the Shinkansen, but the slower pace means more time to appreciate the rural and coastal scenery between the two cities. This is a particularly good option for travelers who enjoy watching everyday Japanese life unfold through the window, small stations, rice fields, and glimpses of the sea included.

Best time of year to travel

  • Spring (late March to early May): Cherry blossoms line the route and Shizuoka's parks burst into color. This is a busy travel period across Japan, so book ahead.
  • Autumn (October to November): Cooler temperatures, beautiful foliage, and excellent visibility for Mount Fuji views make this arguably the finest time for this route.
  • Winter (December to February): The clearest skies of the year make winter the top season for Mount Fuji photography. The city of Shizuoka is quieter and accommodation prices are more favorable.
  • Summer (July to August): Warm and humid, with vibrant festivals in Shizuoka Prefecture, though Mount Fuji views can be obscured by summer haze and cloud.

Getting to Shizuoka and beyond

Shizuoka Station sits at the center of the city and serves as the main gateway for both local and regional travel. Onward connections from here are straightforward, whether you are continuing along the Tokaido corridor or exploring the wider prefecture.

Within Shizuoka City

The city center is compact and walkable from the station, with most key sights, including Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, the Sumpu Castle Park ruins, and the downtown shopping streets, reachable on foot or by bicycle. The Shizuoka Railway Shin-Shizuoka Station is a short walk from the main JR station and connects the city center northward toward Abe River and the foothills beyond.

Day trips and regional connections

Shizuoka's position along the Tokaido Shinkansen line makes it a natural hub for exploring the wider region:

  • Fujinomiya, the closest major town to the southern slopes of Mount Fuji and the starting point for popular Fuji climbing trails, accessible by the JR Minobu Line from Fuji Station (one stop east of Shizuoka on the Tokaido Line).
  • Atami, a classic hot spring resort town on Sagami Bay, a short ride east along the Tokaido Line and an easy half-day trip.
  • Hamamatsu, to the west, famous for its eel cuisine, musical instrument museums, and a large castle park, easily reached on the conventional Tokaido Line or a short Shinkansen hop.
  • Tokyo, continuing east on the Shinkansen, Shizuoka serves as a convenient midpoint stop for travelers heading to the capital.

Your JR Pass remains valid across Shinkansen and conventional JR services for all of these connections, making Shizuoka an excellent base or stopover on a broader Japan journey.

What to expect when you arrive in Shizuoka

Shizuoka Station (50 Kuroganecho, Aoi-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture 420-0851) is a modern and well-organized transport hub with a clear layout and good English signage throughout. The station is divided into a JR section on the south side and the Shizuoka Railway private line on the north side, so it is worth knowing your exit before you arrive.

Practical information at the station

  • Tourist information: The Shizuoka City Tourist Information Center is located near the station's north exit and provides maps, local guides, and transport advice. Staff can assist with English-language queries and help orient first-time visitors.
  • Luggage storage: Coin lockers are available in various sizes throughout the station. For larger bags, luggage forwarding services can send your bags to your next destination across Japan, particularly useful if you plan to do sightseeing on foot before heading onward.
  • Currency and connectivity: ATMs at the station accept international cards; Japan Post and convenience store ATMs (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) are the most reliable options. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the station building.

Arriving in Shizuoka for the first time

Shizuoka is a city that rewards travelers who take their time. The south exit leads directly toward the commercial center, department stores, and the main shopping arcades. The north exit opens toward a quieter residential neighborhood and the foothills, and is the better starting point for those heading to Sengen Shrine or planning hikes into the surrounding hills.

One of the best ways to settle into Shizuoka after arrival is to seek out a cup of local green tea, the prefecture produces roughly 40% of Japan's total tea output, and the quality in local teahouses and cafés around the station area is exceptional. Look for shops selling Hon Yama or Kawane varieties, both of which are prized among Japanese tea enthusiasts and make an excellent souvenir to take home.
