Orvieto, a stunning clifftop town, can easily be reached by train from Rome. I always opt for the train when traveling across Italy, and with a wide choice of departures and affordable fares, it is clearly the best way to get to Orvieto as well. Below, I’ll show you everything you need to know about making the train journey from Rome to Orvieto.

The Rome to Orvieto regional train

The Rome to Orvieto regional train

Route overview

The train service from Rome to Orvieto is operated by Trenitalia, Italy’s national railway company. On this route, you can choose between InterCity trains and fast regional services, known in Italian as ‘regionale veloce’. The distance by rail from Rome to Orvieto is 124 kilometers (77 miles), with the fastest trains taking 1 hour and 16 minutes to complete the journey.

Transportation experience

Booking Italian train tickets is easy on Omio. With a single search, you can instantly see all train services and sort them by departure time, price, duration and many other parameters. Another feature of Omio that I appreciate is that fare conditions, such as whether your ticket is changeable or refundable, are clearly displayed.

Departure station

Roma Termini is the main railway station in Rome, and the one most tourists are likely to use when traveling to Orvieto. However, most trains also call at Roma Tiburtina, which may also be a convenient departure point. If you are departing from Roma Termini and are new to train travel in Italy, arrive at least half an hour before departure, as this busy station can be overwhelming. There are dozens of shops and cafés in the station concourse if you want to buy something before departure. Keep in mind that you need to scan the QR code on your ticket to access the platforms, so have it ready.

Arrival station

Orvieto’s station is located down in the valley. To reach the city center on the clifftop, it’s best to take the funicular, located directly opposite the railway station.

Schedule & frequency

There are currently 12 direct trains from Roma Termini to Orvieto. Five of them are InterCity trains, and seven are regional trains.

Onboard experience & services

I took an early evening regional train from Rome to Orvieto. I sat in second class, with seats arranged in a 2+2 configuration. The train was perfectly comfortable for the relatively short journey, even though there were no facilities on board apart from toilets. Unlike InterCity trains, where your ticket includes a seat reservation, regional trains have unreserved seating, so you can take any available seat. The train journey itself from Rome to Orvieto was pleasant, with some scenic views of the hilly landscape from the window.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

For my Rome to Orvieto ticket on a regional train, I paid just €10.10. Regional trains in Italy have fixed prices, and tickets can never sell out. In contrast, InterCity trains have variable pricing based on demand, and tickets can sell out.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Choose the train that best fits your schedule, as regional and InterCity services are very similar on this route.
  • Check the train number before boarding, as Orvieto is an intermediate stop and the final destination may be different.
  • Take the funicular opposite the station on arrival, as it is the easiest way to reach the clifftop town center.

Conclusion

I had a highly enjoyable trip from Rome to Orvieto on a Trenitalia regional train. The train was comfortable, and the ticket price was highly affordable. I can really recommend making this journey!
