I used the train from New York to Newark to get back to the airport before leaving and returning to Italy: traveling from New York City to Newark by train is undoubtedly one of the most efficient ways to move between these two busy hubs. It’s quick, well connected, and avoids the unpredictability of New York traffic!

New York seen from Central Park. Unforgettable!
The train journey from New York Penn Station to Newark takes about 20 to 30 minutes, covering roughly 16 kilometers (10 miles). Beware: it’s one of the busiest commuter routes in the area so be “ready”!
Luckily I booked my ticket on the Omio app, and I found it especially useful for comparing schedules across different train services. The booking process was fast, and having my ticket ready on my phone (I left home my computer and I was able to do everything via smartphone, with satisfaction!) made everything feel seamless… exactly what you need in a fast-paced city like New York.
Penn Station is beautiful but can be hectic, anyway I must say that with a bit of attention to the departure boards, it’s manageable (it's nothing compared to Tokyo stations!). I arrived early to avoid rushing and found my track without issues.
Newark Penn Station is well organized and easy to navigate. The most important thing you have to know is that from there you can quickly connect to local transport or head to Newark Airport, just like I did.
Trains between the Big Apple and Newark run very frequently, often every 10-15 minutes, which makes planning extremely flexible. Again: if you can definitely book your ticket in advance, just in case.
The train was simple but efficient, with enough seating and space for a short journey. This trip wasn't about luxury, it was about speed and comfort... and so it was.
I paid around $15 for my ticket. Pretty standard, prices typically range between $10 and $20 depending on the service you choose.
