I recently took the train from Barcelona to Narbonne, booking with Renfe AVE, for a weekend in this beautifully historic French city. The direct service from Barcelona Sants to Narbonne took just about two hours from station to station. Traveling by train is one of the most comfortable ways to get between Spain and France. You can sip a coffee from the bar as you cruise along at high speed and arrive right in the heart of Narbonne, rested and ready to enjoy the city’s charm.
The Barcelona to Narbonne train covers approximately 235 km, running along parts of the Mediterranean coast before crossing into southern France. The total journey takes a little over two hours. This cross-border Renfe AVE connection links Spain and France without dreaded airport queues or long rides on the bus. It’s a quick and comfortable alternative to flying (and often more affordable). The seats are spacious, the ride is smooth, and it’s easy to settle in with a coffee and enjoy the scenery along the way.
Booking about a month in advance, I secured my Renfe AVE First Class seat online through Omio. After paying €52 by credit card, I received my mobile ticket by email and through the app, which made boarding simple with a quick QR scan at the gate. The departure station, Barcelona Sants, is large and modern, with plenty of local shops and cafés alongside familiar names like McDonald’s. I recommend arriving early, grabbing a snack, and taking a moment to watch the bustle before departure. You’ll go through a short security check and a separate ticket control before entering the platform, but with Renfe’s AVE Internacional service, the process is quick and very well organized.
Barcelona Sants is one of Spain’s busiest rail hubs, with clear signage in both English and Spanish and an easy-to-navigate layout for high-speed departures. You’ll find a range of coffee shops and bakeries with fresh pastries, including two Caffe de l’Estació branches, plus familiar fast food options. If you're on a budget, vending machines throughout the concourse sell snacks and bottled drinks.
Narbonne station is close to the city center. Compared to Barcelona Sants, it’s much smaller but still easy to reach by local buses, regional trains, or taxis. From the station, you can walk to the scenic canal area within a few minutes, where you’ll find coffee shops, small restaurants, and several hotels.
Renfe’s AVE trains on this international route run twice daily in each direction, departing at 8:19 AM and 4:34 PM. I took the morning train because it let me enjoy daylight for the scenic stretch past Perpignan and still arrive in Narbonne before lunch. The journey lasts a little over 2 hours, which is just enough time to relax, read, or enjoy the onboard service before arriving in France.
Riding in First Class on the Renfe AVE from Barcelona to Narbonne was a great experience from start to finish. The wide seats reclined smoothly, giving me plenty of legroom. Each seat had a reading light, a charging plug, and a fold-out table, which made it super easy to settle in for the ride. The onboard Wi-Fi was stable and fast enough to check my morning emails and some light scrolling through Facebook. To connect, you need to use the train’s PlayRENFE platform, which also offers a few movies and documentaries. You can even try a short Spanish or French lesson if you need to brush up on your skills. The bar car is a Renfe favorite of mine. I usually pick up a fresh, warm croissant and a hot coffee, both nicely presented and served with a smile. If you’re traveling with luggage, there are overhead racks for small bags and larger storage spaces at the carriage ends. On trains from Barcelona to Narbonne, passengers can bring up to three bags of up to 25 kg each. The most scenic stretch along the route unfolds between Perpignan and Narbonne. The train glides alongside inland lagoons that reflect the sky and create long, peaceful vistas. Thanks to the large windows, those views feel cinematic rather than just a blur.
If you’re planning to take this route, it’s worth booking your ticket about a month in advance to get the best deal and secure your preferred First Class seat. When you book on Omio, you’ll receive your ticket by email and in the app, which makes check-in at Barcelona Sants completely paper-free. Prices can vary slightly depending on the season, but Renfe’s fares are usually best when booked early.
