Flying from/to Hong Kong International Airport

If you are planning to fly to/from Hong Kong International Airport , check out our tips on what’s the best way to travel between the airport and the city center. It’s always good to know, what’s the most convenient way to get to your destination. You can also find some data on the Hong Kong International Airport facilities and some local tips on the airport itself.

Arriving at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)

Hong Kong is one of Asia's most developed, bustling metropolises. The multilingual and multicultural city is one of the world's most densely populated. Although famous for being a modern hub of technology and innovation, Hong Kong has a fascinating history stretching back to Neolithic times, when it was first believed to have been inhabited. Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest airports globally. The airport is open 24 hours a day, and is a hub for Hong Kong's national carrier, Cathay Pacific Airlines, as well as an important city for Singapore Airlines, China Airlines, and Air India, among others.

What's the best way to get to the city center from Hong Kong International Airport?

The best way to reach Hong Kong city center from the airport is via the Airport Express train. This train service operates highly efficient, fast, and convenient journeys into Central Station in Hong Kong. The journey takes 24 minutes, and trains are as frequent as every ten to 12 minutes. Airport Express trains operate 24 hours a day, and they are the fastest way to reach the city center, as they avoid traffic entirely. The second-best way to get to the city center is by public bus. The Citybus A and N buses operate frequent and efficient routes into central Hong Kong. The bus journey takes roughly one hour, but takes passengers to numerous inner-city stops along the way. There are additional free shuttle buses from the city center's Central Station to major hotels and other accommodations.

How far is it from the city center to Hong Kong International Airport?

Hong Kong's city center is roughly 24 miles (40 kilometers) east of Hong Kong International Airport. Although it's built on reclaimed land to the west of the Hong Kong mainland, it's well connected with the city. The public transportation network in Hong Kong is highly efficient, and most people in the city travel this way. It's possible to drive to the city but not recommended, as traffic congestion is fairly high in Hong Kong. Driving takes 35 minutes in light traffic conditions and uses mostly highways. It is recommended that passengers taking the train give themselves at least 35 to 45 minutes for the journey. Those taking the bus might need at least one hour, but preferably one-and-a-half to two hours, in case of traffic.

What services are there at Hong Kong International Airport?

Hong Kong International Airport has modernized facilities and services for arriving passengers, ranging from traditional amenities, to free shower facilities, charging stations, free WiFi, and children's play areas. There are free strollers for those traveling with little ones, and currency exchange and bank services. Passengers need not travel to Hong Kong hungry, with plenty of world-renowned Chinese restaurant chains, authentic Asian cuisine, and classic fast-food and other Western options to choose from. There are shops for anything passengers may require upon arriving in Hong Kong, including convenience items, beauty products and fashion, travel accessories, and more.

How accessible is the route for those with limited mobility?

Hong Kong International Airport will assist passengers with limited mobility in several ways. There is a free-of-charge wheelchair service for all passengers who require it, whether they want to get on or off a flight or move around the airport. Assistance should be booked through the airline or travel agent, not the airport directly, and should be requested 48 hours before flying. The Airport Express Train is accessible to those with limited mobility, including those in wheelchairs, but such passengers should alert the train company, MTR, prior to arrival. There are elevators and accessible toilets at the train stations. The Citybus routes are wheelchair accessible, although buses can typically only take one or two passengers in wheelchairs. Passengers in wheelchairs should hail the bus, and the driver will help with boarding and alighting if they have space.

Local tips: what to know before flying to Hong Kong International Airport

Security within the airport is intensive, and passengers traveling with any special requirements such as medicine will require extra time for thorough checks. There are eight levels in the airport, and those with limited mobility will want to use the airport's many elevators and escalators to move around the airport. Travelers should make sure to take advantage of the drinking fountains throughout the airport, as Hong Kong can be very hot and overwhelming for those unaccustomed to tropical climates. When they can, locals take the Airport Express Train for its 24-hour convenience and fast journey into the city. Those meeting family or others at the airport for pickup may enjoy a meal in one of the airport's world-famous dining establishments.
