If you want to hit the slopes of the Alps or explore the lakes and valleys around Interlaken, getting to southern Switzerland from Zurich is easy. There are no bus routes, and the distance is too short for commercial air travel, leaving trains or driving as the only options. Thankfully, travelling by train to Interlaken only takes around 2 hours (with a change in Bern), so it's hassle-free and convenient.
Return trips from Interlaken to Zurich are also available.
Trains are a fast, comfortable and extremely convenient way to travel from Zurich to Interlaken. SBB operates a regular daily service between the two cities, requiring just a single change along the way. Trains run from 7:00 a.m. until 10:45 p.m., and services depart every hour throughout the day. The fastest total journey time between the two Swiss cities is a little under 2 hours, although some journeys take 3 hours, so keep an eye on the schedule to choose the fastest route. All trains depart from Zurich Hauptbahnhof and arrive at Interlaken Ost, and generally stop at Bern, where travelers have to switch trains. Getting to the Hauptbahnhof should be simple. The main station is located in central Zurich, between the River Sihl and the Limmat, with plenty of tram connections to the rest of the city. When you get to Interlaken, Ost station is in the eastern half of town, right next to the Aare river. From there, it's a 20 minute walk into the city, and shuttle buses are available to mountain resorts if you plan to head into the Alps. You can also reach the beautiful Brienzersee by foot, which is 15 minutes' walk to the north east.
