Getting to Austria's beautiful capital city is easy for anyone coming from Zurich. If you are not in a hurry or want a budget option, buses leave every day and take around 11 hours. Trains are slightly faster and also run on a daily basis. However, anyone on a tight schedule will want to catch a flight from Zurich to Vienna. At 1 hour 25 minutes, the flight time is far quicker than land-based travel options and there are plenty of flights to pick from every day.
Return trips from Vienna to Zurich are also available.
Both Flixbus and Eurolines run regular buses from Zurich to Vienna, with travel options every day of the week. However, Flixbus offer far more choices, with early morning, mid-morning and late afternoon departure times. All buses leave from the bus station at Sihlquai and get into Vienna's Erdberg Bus Terminal, and the journey takes 11 hours. A change may also be needed, usually in Wurzburg.
Trains are a great way to reach Vienna from Zurich, with daily services provided by OBB Railjet. OBB's first train of the day leaves Zurich Hauptbahnhof at 8:40 a.m., and the last train leaves at 12:40 p.m. Direct trains take 7 hours 40 minutes to reach Vienna's Hauptbahnhof, but some services require a brief change, adding an hour onto the journey time.
Flights from Zurich to Vienna are provided by Niki, Austrian Airlines and Swiss Air, and there are hourly departures every day of the week. The earliest flight leaves Kloten Airport just after 7:00 a.m. and gets into Vienna International Airport just 1 hour 25 minutes later. No changes are needed en route, and all planes fly direct.
