There are no practical or economical methods of flying between the cities of Frankfurt am Main and Cologne; however, the journey can be made by either bus and train. Making the journey by train is slightly quicker than by bus for travelers in Germany, but both have direct routes leaving and arriving in the city centers of Frankfurt and Cologne.

There are 11 daily direct buses from Frankfurt to Cologne are operated by Postbus, Eurolines, Megabus, RegioJet, and SemiTimes with journey times of between 2 and 4 hours. Departures commence at around 3:00 a.m. and continue until just before 8:00 p.m. Postbus, RegioJet and Eurolines depart from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and terminate at Cologne Flughafen Station. Semi Times buses leave from Frankfurt Sudbahnhof and finish on Gummersbacherstrasse while Megabus departures are from Pforzheimerstrasse into Flughafen. All departure and arrival points are within walking distance of tourist attractions and conveniently located to join the cities' efficient public transport networks.
Direct Deutsche Bahn trains from Frankfurt to Cologne commence at just before 4:00 a.m. with frequent departures throughout the day until around 11:30 p.m. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. Trains depart from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof which is well situated for the city center's transport network of S and U-Bahn trains, buses and night buses. Trains arrive at Cologne Hauptbahnhof, located next to the cathedral and linked to the rest of the city by local buses and the Cologne Stadtbahn light rail system. Both stations have car rentals and taxis.
