She is particularly fond of train travel as a way to discover new destinations across Europe.

As my time in Rome was coming to an end, it was time to begin making my way back to Fiumicino Airport to catch my flight back home. I have been staying with a friend in the Testaccio district of Rome, and one evening I made my way to Roma Termini to catch the train to the airport. As I had taken the train to get to Rome in the first place, it seemed like the obvious choice to take it again to go back home.

Route overview

The distance between Rome and Fiumicino Airport is relatively small, measuring around 28 kilometers. The fastest service from Rome to Fiumicino Airport is the Leonardo Express, a direct train that runs from Roma Termini to the airport in around 30-35 minutes.

Because the train runs directly between the two stations without intermediate stops, it’s a simple and predictable way to reach the airport, especially when traveling later in the evening.

Transportation experience

Before leaving for the station, I stopped by a Mercato di Testaccio close to my friend’s flat to pick up something to eat on the way. I picked up a small polpetta di carne and a ciabatta filled with salame, pecorino, and arugula. It is a type of food that tastes even better when you’re leaving a city.

A little later that evening, I reached Roma Termini and purchased a ticket for the Leonardo Express. The express runs regularly from the station and goes directly to Fiumicino Airport.

Departure station

Roma Termini railway station is the central railway station in Rome and one of the busiest transport centers in Italy. Despite its size, the station is well-organized, and signs are present to help locate the platforms for the Leonardo Express.

There are also plenty of cafés, shops, and ticket machines inside the station, so it’s easy to grab something quick or buy your ticket before boarding.

Arrival station

Since the station is situated right at Fiumicino Airport, getting there couldn’t be easier. The station is actually in the airport itself, and there will be signs to direct you on where to go next.

The station isn’t pretty, but at this point, you just don’t care. There is no way around having to use an escalator or lift to get from the platforms into the terminal, and in only a few moments, you’ll find yourself in the departures hall, shifting gears from “last night in Rome” to “airport mentality.”

Schedule & frequency

The Leonardo Express runs frequently between Roma Termini and Fiumicino Airport, with departures roughly every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day.

For my trip, I caught one of the evening departures, which fit well with my flight schedule and allowed me to arrive at the airport without rushing.

Onboard experience & services

The Leonardo Express is a special train for airport transport, and as a result, there is enough space for baggage and comfortable seating for the brief journey.

Given that the journey is only half an hour long, most people just sit back and use their phones or make arrangements for their flight in a low voice. I took some time to finish a sandwich I had purchased earlier and watch the lights of the city fade as the train headed in the direction of the airport.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Tickets for the Leonardo Express are fixed-price and easy to purchase at the station. On my trip, the ticket cost €14 and the journey took about 34 minutes from Roma Termini to Fiumicino Airport. Here’s roughly what my travel costs looked like:
