Since March 2024, the Osaka to Kanazawa journey requires a transfer. The Thunderbird limited express (JR West) now runs from Osaka to Tsuruga, where travelers transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for the onward leg to Kanazawa. Prior to this extension the Thunderbird ran through to Kanazawa directly, and the route through the Sea of Japan coastline and lush Hokuriku landscapes remains every bit as scenic.

The route passes through some genuinely beautiful countryside, rice paddies, coastal glimpses, and forested hillsides, making the journey itself part of the experience rather than simply a means of getting from A to B.

Osaka to Kanazawa by train: what to expect on board

Traveling on the Thunderbird from Osaka to Kanazawa is a comfortable and scenic experience that gives you a genuine taste of regional Japan before you even arrive at your destination.

The Thunderbird is a reserved-seat limited express service with a layout typical of high-quality JR West intercity trains. Seats are well-spaced with ample legroom, and the carriages are clean, air-conditioned, and quiet. Both reserved and unreserved seating options are available, though booking a reserved seat in advance is strongly recommended during busy periods to guarantee your spot and your preferred window view.

Best seats for the view

The scenery along this route changes noticeably as you leave Osaka and move northward through Kyoto Prefecture and into Fukui and Ishikawa:

• Sit on the left-hand side of the train (window seats on the A side) when traveling from Osaka to Kanazawa for the best views of the coastal and rural landscapes as you approach the Hokuriku region.
• The stretch between Fukui and Kanazawa is particularly scenic, with open countryside and traditional farmhouses rolling past the window.
• Keep an eye out for the Echizen coastline, on clear days, the views toward the Sea of Japan are especially striking.

The Thunderbird is a reliable, punctual service in keeping with JR West's high standards. Best time of year to travel

• Spring (late March to early May): Cherry blossom season transforms the landscapes along the route and makes Kanazawa's Kenroku-en Garden one of the most beautiful spots in all of Japan. Trains are busier during this period, so book ahead.
• Autumn (mid-October to late November): The foliage along the Hokuriku corridor is stunning, and Kanazawa's temples and gardens take on rich golden and red hues. Arguably the most atmospheric time to visit.
• Winter (December to February): Snow blankets the Kanazawa region heavily in winter, a magical sight, and far fewer tourists than at peak season. The Kenroku-en snow lantern season in February is a local highlight. Dress warmly and check for any weather-related service adjustments.
• Summer (July to August): Warm and lively, with various regional festivals along the route. The Obon period in mid-August brings increased passenger volumes, so securing a reserved seat is especially important.

• Fukui, easily reachable by limited express, and home to some of Japan's best preserved Eiheiji Zen temple complex and excellent dinosaur museum.
• Shirakawa-go, the famous UNESCO-listed historic village with traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses is accessible by highway bus from Kanazawa Station in around an hour.
• Kyoto, the Thunderbird also runs directly between Kanazawa and Kyoto, making a Kyoto stopover a natural addition to any itinerary in this part of Japan.
