I was staying in Figueres and knew I couldn’t skip Girona, so I booked my Figueres to Girona train tickets on Omio’s route page in minutes. If you’re planning to travel from Figueres to Girona, Renfe’s high-speed AVE train is the smoothest way to go. The ride is short, the stations are easy to use, and the timing works perfectly for a day trip. Here's what to expect along the way.
This is a high-speed link between Figueres–Vilafant and Girona, covering about 33 km in roughly 14 minutes on the fastest services. Figueres–Vilafant Station is located on the edge of town, while Girona Station sits close to the historic center. If you’re comparing ways to travel from Figueres to Girona, this route is faster than driving during busy hours and more comfortable than taking a local bus if you’re traveling with luggage.
I booked through the Omio app, chose Renfe AVE, and added my digital ticket to Apple Wallet. The Figueres to Girona train route with AVE is my top pick because it’s fast, the seats are comfortable, and onboard Wi-Fi through PlayRenfe lets me check maps before arriving. If you’re deciding between taking the bus from Figueres to Girona, the train wins on both time and comfort for this corridor.
I reached Figueres–Vilafant by a quick €8 taxi from the Dalí area, then followed clear signs to security and the platforms. The station is modern and has a small café. Facilities include restrooms, a ticket office, and a pleasant outdoor terrace. After checking in at the main concourse, boarding started a few minutes before departure. I recommend arriving with a small buffer before your train.
The train from Figueres arrives at Girona Station, located just a short walk from the city center. In the new building between the train and bus stations, there are lockers available, so I dropped my bag there before walking to the cathedral and the Onyar bridges. I paid just €3.50 to rent a small locker for the day. There are also several cafés nearby if you’d like a quick espresso before exploring. Signage is bilingual and easy to follow toward the exits and the bus station next door.
On a typical weekday, there are around 15–17 direct trains from Figueres to Girona. The first departures leave around 5:30 AM, and there are multiple services throughout the day, with AVE trains running several times daily. I took a mid-morning train at 10:30 AM as part of a day trip, arriving in Girona just as the old town was waking up.
I rode one of Renfe’s modern AVE high-speed trains, traveling in Estándar Class (Second Class). The coach was quiet and comfortable, with generous legroom. There was a power socket at the seat, which was perfect as I needed to charge my phone for the day trip. The PlayRenfe Wi-Fi worked well, and I used it to check maps before arriving. Restrooms were available, though I had already used the station facilities and didn’t get a chance to check them out. On AVE trains from Figueres to Girona, there’s a bar car and optional Box Menu pre-orders, but for this short 14-minute hop, I stayed in my seat and watched the Catalan countryside pass by through the large windows. Renfe AVE trains to Girona allow up to three pieces of luggage (total combined weight of 25 kg), but I only brought one day pack for this trip. There were overhead racks and space under the seats for small bags, along with larger luggage areas near the doors. Even though it was a short trip, the ride was smooth and a pleasant reminder of how easy Spain’s high-speed train network makes regional travel.
Prices vary, but booking early on Omio usually gets the lowest fare. Keep your passport handy if you’re a non-EU traveler, and add your ticket to your phone for a quick gate scan. If you plan to continue your trip, it’s easy to compare trains from Girona to Barcelona within the app.

For speed and convenience, riding the Figueres to Girona train with Renfe AVE is hard to beat. I loved stepping off in Girona, ready to wander the old town within minutes. If you’re mapping a bigger Catalonia itinerary, compare onward connections like the train to Barcelona or even regional buses from Figueres to Girona to fine-tune your plans.
