Traveling from Alberobello to Bari by train is less about speed and more about the experience itself. Leaving behind the fairytale trulli houses, you gradually transition into the vibrant coastal energy of Bari. I took this route while exploring Puglia, and it felt like a slow, authentic glimpse into southern Italy. Simple, scenic and beautifully local. Here’s everything you need to know before planning your journey.

Alberobello and its trulli houses
The route between Alberobello and Bari is mainly served by Ferrovie del Sud Est, a regional operator that connects smaller towns across Puglia. Unlike high-speed routes in Northern Italy, this journey covers approximately 55 km at a slower pace, typically taking 1.5 hours to 2 hours, depending on the service and connections. Rather than efficiency, it’s about seeing a different side of Italy, one that feels more local and untouched.
I booked my ticket locally, which is common for regional routes like this. Other options are sometimes available online. The train itself had a simple, no-frills feel, which is part of the charm. As we left Alberobello, the landscape opened up into olive groves, with views of dry stone walls and scattered countryside homes. This is where the journey becomes special. You’re not just moving between destinations, but are actually seeing Puglia unfold before you.
Alberobello’s train station is small and easy to navigate, located just a short walk from the trulli district. There aren’t many facilities, so it’s a good idea to grab water or snacks beforehand, which is what I did. The atmosphere is quiet and local, very different from the busy stations of larger cities.
You arrive at Bari Centrale, the main railway hub of the city. From here, it’s about a 15–20 minute walk to Bari Vecchia, the historic old town by the sea. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or a local bus. The contrast between Alberobello and Bari is immediate, from peaceful countryside to lively urban energy.
Trains on this route are less frequent compared to major Italian routes, so planning ahead is important. There are around 6 to 10 departures daily, with the first train leaving approximately between 5:00 and 6:00 am and the last train departing in the early evening. Journey times typically range from 1.5 to 2 hours. Some routes may require a connection, so always check your itinerary in advance.
I traveled in second class, which is standard on regional trains and perfectly adequate for this journey. The seating was simple but comfortable, with enough space for a relaxed ride. There was room for luggage and basic facilities on board, although services like food or drink are not typically available. Given the slower pace and scenic surroundings, the experience felt more about the journey itself rather than onboard extras.
My ticket cost around €8, making this one of the most affordable train journeys in Italy. Prices are usually fixed for regional routes, so booking in advance isn’t always necessary, but it’s still worth checking schedules ahead of time.
