The Japan routes where the bullet train beats the plane
A door-to-door comparison of Shinkansen and domestic flights.
Routes to Consider for Your Next Trip
Tokyo -> Kyoto
⏱️ SAVE: About 135 minutes door-to-door.
🧳 WHY IT MATTERS: Kyoto has no airport. A "flight to Kyoto" still means Osaka-area airport + onward transfer.
Insight: The flight is not really to Kyoto. The train is.
Tokyo -> Osaka
⏱️ SAVE: About 95 minutes once airport time is counted.
🗻 BONUS: On clear days, the Tokaido Shinkansen can turn the trip into a Mount Fuji view moment.
Insight: The train is not just transport here. It can become part of the Japan experience.
Tokyo -> Kanazawa
⏱️ SAVE: About 115 minutes in our door-to-door model.
🚍 AIRPORT REALITY: Flights land at Komatsu Airport; the train lands at Kanazawa Station.
Insight: Rail brings you to the itinerary. Flying brings you to the next transfer.

Smart Booking & Pricing
Japan's best choice is rarely decided by ticket price alone:
- Point-to-point planning matters: After the JR Pass price increase, many visitors now compare individual Shinkansen tickets route by route. Start with Omio's Japan journey planner.
- Hidden flight costs add up: Airport trains, buses and baggage can change the value of a low headline fare.
- Pass or point-to-point? For multi-city rail trips, compare single tickets with the Japan Rail Pass before booking.

What Changes the Calculation?
The city-center advantage
Major Shinkansen stations sit inside the trip itself: Tokyo, Shinagawa, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Hiroshima, Hakata and Kanazawa. Airports often add a second journey.
The hidden-hours factor
A 70- or 90-minute flight can become a 4-hour journey after access, security, boarding and baggage are counted.
The luggage question
For Japan travelers with suitcases, the fare is only part of the decision. Baggage rules, station access and waiting time can change the real value.
The 4-hour Japan rule
If the Shinkansen journey is under about 4 hours, rail often challenges or beats flying. Beyond that, routes like Tokyo to Fukuoka and Tokyo to Sapporo become real air contenders.
The Luggage Question
2 bags up to 30 kg
JR Central allows two pieces of luggage up to 30 kg each, making rail easier for multi-city trips.
Fare type matters
Domestic flight baggage depends on airline and ticket type; low-cost fares can shift once bags are added.
No carousel wait
On the train, your bag stays with you. At the airport, security, boarding and reclaim add process time.
Reserve oversized space
Bags over 160 cm need a reserved oversized-baggage space on Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen services.
What Kind of Japan Traveler Are You?
The Golden Corridor planner
You are moving between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. The Shinkansen is usually the default: fast, frequent and direct.
The suitcase traveler
You care about platform access, fewer queues and avoiding baggage surprises more than chasing the lowest headline fare.
The long-distance optimizer
You compare honestly. For Sapporo and sometimes Fukuoka, flying can still be the practical choice.
The conscious vacationer
You want the lower-carbon option when time is competitive. In our Japan model, rail cuts route emissions by roughly 70-77% on the routes analyzed.
Methodology & Transparency
The 120-minute flight overhead baseline
As on Omio's European Trains vs Flights page, the flight model does not rely on in-air duration alone. It includes a standardized 120-minute airport overhead for check-in, security, boarding, deplaning and baggage handling.
Airport-to-city transfer modeling
Flight routing includes common public transport access between city centers and airports, such as Haneda, Itami, Kansai, Hiroshima, Komatsu, Fukuoka, Kagoshima and New Chitose. This is why the total flight time is higher than the scheduled time in the air.
Rail infrastructure parameters
Train timings use direct Shinkansen or optimized intercity rail journey times between the main stations. No airport-style security or baggage overhead is added to rail.
CO2 data and assumptions
CO2 savings use 20 g CO2 per passenger-km for Shinkansen rail, based on JR East's 2024 disclosure, and 113 g CO2 per revenue passenger-km for Japan domestic aviation, based on ICCT's country-level aviation intensity. Route-level savings vary because rail route distance and airport-pair flight distance are not identical. JR Central also reports that the Tokaido Shinkansen emits about one-twelfth of the CO2 of an aircraft on Tokyo to Osaka.
