If you need to travel from Austria's capital to Hallstadt in central Germany, you can choose from buses, trains and flights (or even car pooling services like Bla Bla Car). Flying may be slightly faster than taking the train, but all journeys require a couple of changes along the way, and the fastest journey will be between 4-5 hours.
Return trips from Hallstadt to Vienna are also available.
Catching the bus makes perfect sense if you are traveling from Vienna to Hallstadt, and there are three services to choose from every day of the week. All buses are operated by Flixbus, and they leave at 7:00 a.m., 12:55 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. The earliest service is the fastest route, taking 11 hours to reach Hallstadt, but the others take five hours longer, so factor that into your travel schedule. All routes require a couple of changes along the way.
Deutsche Bahn provides a daily, regular service from Vienna's Hauptbahnhof to Bamberg, which is a few miles from Hallstadt. The earliest train departs at 6:50 a.m. and then services leave every couple of hours until 6:30 p.m. Total journey time should be around 5 hours 45 minutes, and two changes are needed. Overnight travel is also possible, but there are no direct connections.
It is possible to fly from Vienna to Nuremburg, which is a short train or bus journey from Hallstadt, and there is a regular, direct connection between the two cities. Air Berlin and Germanwings operate services on the Vienna to Nuremburg route, and the flight time is just over an hour in total.
