Deutsche Bahn (DB) is Germany’s main train operator, running around 40,000 domestic and international services each day. InterRegio (IR) is a train category for semi-fast, long-distance domestic train services in several European countries, notably Switzerland, where Swiss Federal Railways operates a dense network. These trains typically have more stops and are usually more affordable than upscale long-distance trains like the InterCity (IC). While the InterRegio concept has been used in various countries such as Denmark, Hungary, Poland, and Portugal, it is particularly prominent in Switzerland. In Switzerland, InterRegio trains connect regions and major cities with important regional centers, offering comfortable travel with amenities like Wi-Fi, power outlets, and ample luggage space. They are known for their punctuality and frequent service. In Germany, InterRegio trains were common from 1988 to 2003, connecting regions and mid-sized towns, and were popular for being usable without a supplement. Many German InterRegio lines have since been replaced by InterCity lines or the Interregio-Express (IRE), which is classified as a local passenger train.
