Cercanías is the commuter rail service operated by Renfe, Spain's national railway company, connecting metropolitan areas across the country. Established in 1989, it aims to provide frequent and high-capacity transportation for daily commuters and travelers. Cercanías operates in 12 urban areas, including Madrid, Barcelona (where it's known as Rodalies), Valencia (Rodalia), and Bilbao (Aldiriak). The service integrates with other public transport systems like metro networks, simplifying urban and suburban travel. Ticket options include single, return, and 10-journey "Bonotren" tickets, with prices varying by zone. A notable feature is the "Combinado Cercanías," offering free transfers on Cercanías trains when purchasing long-distance or high-speed AVE tickets. Cercanías trains typically run from early morning until around midnight.
