It was from Paris to Berlin after I graduated from university. I don\u2019t want to say what year as that would date me! As a Detroit native (think cars!), I grew up watching films such as <em>Murder on the Orient Express<\/em> and <em>The Lady Vanishes<\/em> so I had a somewhat old-fashioned notion of what it meant to travel overnight by train. While the reality of my Paris to Berlin night train didn\u2019t live up to the romance and grandeur of my imaginings, I couldn\u2019t think of anything better than conversing with fellow travelers in my couchette cabin and playing Go Fish with my friend, Carrie, who backpacked around Europe with me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"33599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Kupebild-min-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33599\"\/><figcaption>Couchette cabins are the most relaxing way to travel on the Berlin to Stockholm night train: Credit: Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carrie and I boarded many overnight trains over our two months together. Unfortunately, I had to return to the United States, where trains are considered the redheaded stepchild of transit. Hopefully that will change with the proposed $80 billion government overhaul of Amtrak, the passenger railway provider in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Berlin      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Berlin  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Night trains went out of favor in the 2000s for cheap flights as low-cost carriers sprouted up like new heads on Hydra. But with the specter of irreversible climate change on the horizon, sleeper trains have come roaring back in recent years. In 2021 alone, more than 30 night trains connected major cities across the European continent. And major providers, from \u00d6BB to Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get to Trenitalia to the Caledonian Sleeper, are bringing back old routes and lines due to increased demand for sustainable alternatives to flying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Milan to Lecce, Amsterdam to Innsbruck and Paris to Munich, eco-minded and cost-conscious travelers have a variety of routes to choose from but for my money, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/trains\/berlin\/stockholm?utm=source_omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=March&amp;utm_content=BerlintoStockholmNightTrain&amp;utm_term=US_trainsBerlinStockholm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Berlin\u2013Stockholm<\/a> night train is one to look out for in 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"33646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ATMW-Snalltaget-18052021-2009-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33646\"\/><figcaption>Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get\u2019s Marco Andersson believes there is a huge demand for the Berlin to Stockholm night train: Credit: Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get, a small provider that formed in 2009, reinstated the Berlin to Stockholm night train in 2021, after a more than 20-year hiatus, purchasing 10 old couchette coaches from Deutsche Bahn and extending the route from Hamburg on the German side (via Wedler Franz Logistik, a Potsdam-based railway company) and Malm\u00f6 on the Swedish side. Prior to this, there was no overland rail service through Denmark (passengers had to travel by ferry between Sassnitz, Germany, and Trellebord, Denmark, and then take a connection into Stockholm). The ease of the overland journey has made everyone happier although it has increased the travel time significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Berlin      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Berlin  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe saw there was a demand for international train travel after all the climate change discussions. We calculated that it was a risky business but what we could see already in 2021 was that there was a huge demand for [this night train],\u201d says Marco Andersson, Head of Sales at Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get. \u201cIn both the German and the Swedish market, most of the passengers want to go from Berlin to Stockholm or the other way around. This year, we already have sold the [same number of tickets] as in 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"33607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DE_map-train-891x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33607\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Running daily from early April to late September, the longest part of the night train journey occurs at the start, when the train takes you from the hustle and bustle of Berlin and Hamburg into the flat plains of Denmark, stopping in Padborg for Schengen border patrol. This is the most picturesque part of the trip, as you\u2019ll traverse myriad bridges including the Big Belt Bridge and the \u00d8resund Bridge, the latter being a modern marvel built in 2000 to connect Denmark to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/trains\/sweden?utm=source_omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=March&amp;utm_content=BerlintoStockholmNightTrain&amp;utm_term=US_trainsSweden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sweden<\/a>. Admire the scenery in Jutland, Funen, etc. before arriving in Malm\u00f6 at 7:25 a.m.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"33614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Snalltaget-Aare_Sommar2020-4-1024x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33614\"\/><figcaption>The Berlin to Stockholm route takes passengers through the verdant plains of Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Credit: Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The onward journey into Stockholm Central Station consists of eight cars (two of which are sleeper cars only) traveling through Alvesta and other towns before arriving in the late afternoon in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/trains\/stockholm?utm=source_omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=March&amp;utm_content=BerlintoStockholmNightTrain&amp;utm_term=US_trainsStockholm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stockholm<\/a>, refreshed and ready to explore the \u201cVenice of the North.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Stockholm      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Stockholm  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Unlike other routes, the Berlin to Stockholm night train only offers seated cabins and couchette berths\u2014sadly no single-berth private compartments, the one demerit if you\u2019re traveling for business. Couchettes feature six beds with extra mattresses and higher-thread count sheets than normal couchette cabins, as well as power outlets and complementary water. If you have a large enough group, you can reserve a full cabin for everyone but I much prefer the spontaneity of meeting new people from all over the world in a shared couchette. Just pick the bottom or middle bunk for convenience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are focused on the leisure market, when you are traveling for your holiday, when you are traveling together,\u201d says Andersson. \u201cWe want you to see that the price is quite good, that you can relax in your compartment\u2014it\u2019s very cozy\u2014and you wake up in the morning and arrive in Berlin at 9 a.m.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of what ticket you choose, you can feel good about your travel as sleeper trains lower your carbon footprint and Sn\u00e4llt\u00e5get uses green energy sources to reduce the environmental impact.
