But hardly anyone knows about the roots of the Wiesn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grab a <em>Mass<\/em> and discover these useful tips on how to make your Oktoberfest a success. While Munich is out this year due to the pandemic, here are three international alternatives that <em>are<\/em> on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Munich       <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Munich  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oktoberfest: An Origin Story<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To celebrate the wedding of Prince Regent Ludwig of Bavaria, later King Ludwig I, and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, Bavarian National Guardsman Andreas Michael Dall&#8217;Armi launched a horse race. On October 17, 1819, 40,000 spectators gathered on the Theresienwiese\u2014later named after the bride\u2014to watch the spectacle. It was such a hit that it became an annual extravaganza. From the 19th century onwards, it developed into the Oktoberfest we all know and love today, and the small stalls transformed into large beer tents with their own bands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"23661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Schweinshaxe_shutterstock_55125451-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23661\"\/><figcaption>Bavarian <em>Schweineshaxe<\/em> and an Oktoberfest beer are a perfect match. Credit: Shutterstock&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, visitors can choose from around 30 large and small tents that only serve beer from Munich&#8217;s traditional breweries\u2014Augustiner, Paulaner, Hofbr\u00e4u and L\u00f6wenbr\u00e4u, to name a few. In addition to numerous merry-go-rounds and roller coasters, guests can savor food such as <em>Hendl<\/em> (a spiced roast chicken) or <em>Schweinshaxe <\/em>(roasted ham hock). To mark its 200th anniversary, Oktoberfest was expanded in 2010 to include <em>Oide Wiesn<\/em>, an area dedicated to the origins of the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to make your Oktoberfest a success<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be right on trend with a pair of dapper lederhosen or a natty dirndl. If you decide to wear a dirndl, be sure to find out how to knot your bow. The position of the knot tells if you are single or engaged. Also, only take what you really need to the tents since you might be there all day. Since you can expect a colorful mix of traditional brass band, Schlager (traditional German music) and pop music, familiarize yourself with a few classic songs and dances in advance. Each tent has a different vibe: Augustiner Festhalle is more traditional, while Hacker Festzelt attracts a younger crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve found your seat, order your first Mass. But beware: the beer is stronger than usual and a whole liter. Hold it by the handle, between your thumb and the rest of your fingers. You can avoid a too-quick end to your Oktoberfest experience by eating regularly. With all the delicacies on offer, that shouldn&#8217;t be a problem. If you want to try a fresh <em>Weisswurst<\/em> (traditional Bavarian sausage), be quick! They are traditionally only served until noon and come with sweet mustard and a pretzel. Don\u2019t forget to tip the hard-working Wiesn waitresses at the Munich Oktoberfest tents. Some of them lift 18 <em>Masskr\u00fcge<\/em> at once! Talk about girl power!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oktoberfest goes international<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Munich and Oktoberfest belong together like peanut butter and jelly or weisswurst and sweet mustard. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The little town of Frankenmuth, Michigan, about 95 miles north of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/travel\/detroit-mi-3eenv?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=August&amp;utm_content=Oktoberfest_Beginners_Guide&amp;utm_term=US_Travel_Detroit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Detroit<\/a> is a Bavarian-style village that sees an influx of tourists year round, especially during Oktoberfest and Christmas. As the name suggests, the small town was founded in 1845 by immigrants from Franconia and is jokingly called Little Bavaria. <\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Detroit       <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Detroit   <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Between the 16 and 19 of September, you can experience the 31st edition of the officially approved offshoot of Munich&#8217;s Oktoberfest. Expect imported Oktoberfest beer from Munich\u2019s Hofbr\u00e4uhaus, traditional costumes and German-American food. As a special extra, there is an annual dachshund race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/trains\/zurich?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=August&amp;utm_content=Oktoberfest_Beginners_Guide&amp;utm_term=US_Trains_Zurich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zurich<\/a>, Switzerland, also has its own Oktoberfest with a beer garden and beer tents. From September 15 to October 9, the main hall of the main station is decorated in Bavarian blue and white for Z\u00fcri Wiesn. If you arrive by train, you only have to walk a few steps to be greeted by the smell of hot Hendl and traditional music. Z\u00fcri Wiesn has a decisive advantage over other Oktoberfests: you can reserve an entire table for you and your friends.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Zurich       <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Zurich   <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Oktoberfest_Zurich_shutterstock_164052059-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23703\"\/><figcaption>In Switzerland, you can find a beguiling Oktoberfest at the Z\u00fcri Wiesn. You can have all of that and more at Oktoberfest near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/travel\/copenhagen?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=August&amp;utm_content=Oktoberfest_Beginners_Guide&amp;utm_term=US_Travel_Copenhagen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Copenhagen<\/a>, Denmark. The small island of Amager on the Danish coast hosts an annual fete every September that boasts blue-and-white decorations and traditional costumes galore. This year, it runs from September 9-11 and again from September 24-25. While smaller in size than other fests\u2014the space only has one tent that accommodates nearly 3,000 people\u2014it still manages to be boisterous and merry, and is free of charge. Still, you have to wear traditional costumes here.
