Taranto\u2019s most famed dish is <em>Cozze alla Tarantina<\/em>\u2014mussels in a spicy tomato sauce\u2014and you\u2019ll also find calamari and fish served either grilled or raw at pretty much every restaurant. For an interesting look behind the scenes, swing by the Mercato del Pesce in the morning to see chefs selecting items for the day\u2019s meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taranto\u2019s best-known seafood eatery, Gatto Rosso, is renowned for its hot seafood salad along with variations on traditional Puglian dishes such as spaghetti with Taranto clams. The same family has been at the helm of Ges\u00f9 Christo (which, yes, translates as Jesus Christ), another well-regarded seafood trattoria, since the 1960s, while Rist\u00f2 Fratelli Pesce is a favorite with for its seasonal seafood paired with a wide selection of Puglian wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If fish isn\u2019t your thing, try the famous ear-shaped <em>orecchiette<\/em> pasta or stop by a butchershop for a <em>bombette<\/em>, a roll made out of meat, stuffed with various fillings. The Borgo Antico area was once an important part of Magna Graecia, so-called due to the Greek colonization of Southern Italy between the eighth and fifth centuries B.C. The Hellenic rulers left behind such relics as the Doric Temple of Poseidon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further west you\u2019ll find the 11<sup>th<\/sup>-century Cathedral di San Cataldo, one of Puglia\u2019s oldest Romanesque buildings. Cross the bridge to the Borgo Nuovo to marvel at the world\u2019s largest collection of Greek terracotta figures in the Museo Nazionale Archeologico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a break, head south of town to the picturesque beaches of the Salento coast.
