Public Transport in Cologne

The public transport system in the city center of Cologne is affordable, clean and efficient. In Cologne, visitors will find a range of public transport options including trams, buses, and suburban railways. S-Bahn trains are high-speed trains that connect most of the outer suburbs and nearby cities to Cologne and offer direct transport to the airport. Trams in Cologne are unique in that they operate below and above ground, so certain tram stops are at street level while others are similar to a subway station. The trams are ideal for traveling between the different attractions in Cologne as there are multiple stations throughout the city center. Both the trams and trains run at twenty-minute intervals throughout the day and night so visitors can enjoy the nightlife of Cologne without worrying about getting back to their hotel. Buses cover a small portion of the city center but can be an enjoyable way to take in the scenery of Cologne. A KVB ticket is used for all forms of transport in Cologne and these are available as day passes, single tickets, and weekly passes. The KVB tickets can be bought from vending machines at all public transport stations in the city.
