Travelers have a choice of daily direct Athens to Rome flights offering quick connections to the Italian capital throughout the year. Three airlines, including a budget carrier, operate direct services, with a choice of flights to Rome Fiumicino or Ciampino airports. Aegean Airlines and the Italian national carrier Alitalia offer direct Athens to Rome flights, landing at Fiumicino Airport. Alternatively, budget airline Ryanair provides daily direct flights to Ciampino Airport, a little closer to the city center.
The fastest services on the 1049 km route west over the Adriatic Sea from Athens to Rome are Ryanair's flights to Ciampino Airport, taking two hours. Flights with Alitalia and Aegean Airlines to Rome Fiumicino take about five to ten minutes longer, so you shouldn't expect to be in the air longer than 2 hrs 10 minutes if there are no traffic control issues.
There are between six and eight daily direct Athens to Rome flights throughout the week, with the greatest frequency on Mondays and Thursdays. Budget airline Ryanair's schedules offer between one and three daily direct flights to Rome Ciampino. Departures begin with early morning flights and include afternoon and evening take-off times.
Departure airport: Athens International Airport is located around 20 km east of downtown Athens, reached by frequent express buses and Metro services on Line 3, taking 40 minutes to the terminal. Airport facilities include long and short stay parking lots, international restaurants, duty-free shopping, business amenities, and free WiFi.
Arrival airport: Fiumicino is situated about 30 km south-west of central Rome, with Trenitalia's Leonardo Express trains providing frequent 30-minute connections to Termini Station. Ciampino is 17 km from the center, with local buses 720 and 520 providing services to nearby Metro stations. Facilities at the airports include duty-free shopping, Italian wine stores, and business lounges.
