Nestled away amongst the hilly countryside of San Sebastian, this once wooden farmhouse has transformed into one of the top restaurants in the world but still retains a homely, relaxed atmosphere. Like most restaurants of such high calibre, Michelin star chef-owner Andoni Luis Aduriz invites diners to a full artistic experience. With no menu, guests are invited to a 24 course experience personally tailored to individual tastes and dietary requirements. Mugaritz thwarts your expectation of food and fine dining and sways it more towards an artistic experience (edible tableware included!).

Awarded Michelin Star: 2000, 2005

Juan Mari Arzak has consistently been named as one of the best michelin chefs in the world. Considered as the master of the new Basque cuisine movement, Arzak is a must visit for food connoisseurs. With a distinct minimalist interior, it is a perfect surrounding for diners to snap photos of their meal, which is no surprise with such artistic creations. Despite the modern interior, the building itself has been in the family since 1897. Arzak is childish by nature, sparking fun in his dishes and radiating a welcoming atmosphere for guests. One could argue that San Sebastian is the best city for European gourmet dining, which is why food enthusiasts may want to stay longer than one day here.

Michelin star chef, Patron Mauro Colagreco doesn’t see his style of cooking bound to a particular cuisine. Instead he prefers to connect his dishes with the positive aspect of how food can bring people together. This freestyle way of cooking is also noticeable as ingredients are dependent on seasonal availability. Connecting food with happiness, dishes are light and fresh with hints of citrus, which the Menton area is known for. Such tastes harmonise well with the 2 star Michelin restaurant’s bright surrounding as diners are treated to spectacular, uninterrupted views of the Azure coast below.

Awarded Michelin stars: 2007, 2012
When to book: 3 months in advance

A project by Bruno Ceretto, Michelin 3 star restaurant Piazzo Duomo pushes the boundaries of traditional Italian cooking, mixing the popular cuisine with modern techniques. French and Japanese styles are also noticeable in head chef Enrico Crippa’s creations from his experience working in these countries. With ingredients sourced straight from the restaurant’s vegetable garden, meals are dependent on season and availability, meaning no two experiences are the same. Despite this challenge, diners are treated with delicate and gorgeous creations that could be mistaken for contemporary works of art. Most diners spend around 3 hours at Piazza Duomo – some even longer as the establishment accommodates rooms for guests. For lovers of Italian food, it is worth spending some time in the Piedmont region as it is known especially for its truffles and wine production.
