- Best Mobile Browser
- Ease Of Use
- Music/Videos Are Outstanding
- No MMS
- Basic Bluetooth
- No Multi-Tasking
Well the iPhone has taking a bashing from most in the mobile world it seems. It's kinda like fruitcake; either you love it or hate it. Before I get to the the review, I want all to know I'm a Symabian addict at heart ever since the original N-Gage (which I still have btw).
So before I get to to the actual review here's a history of the mobiles I've had, and basically compare to the iPhone, so those out there will know my mind set.
- N-Gage
- Nokia 6682
- Nokia E62
- Sony Ericsson W810i
- Motorola Q9H
- Nokia N95-1
Ok, now to the review!
Physical Design
I love the form factor personally. With it being a touchscreen, with minimal buttons, it keeps things clean and simple. Visually I have to say it's one sexy device, regardless if your a fan of it or not. The only problem I would say about the big screen, is trying not to scratch it all up from normal use, pocketing it, talking, etc,. A good case is a must in my book, or at least a screen protector. It's rather thin, but it's still a bit thick in width, not that bad if your use to QWERTY keypad mobiles, it's definitely no candy bar though. Definitely well designed, for a touchscreen device.
Interface
Once again it's clean and simple. That's good in some respects, and rather backwards in others. Navigating around the springboard is as simple as swiping left or right, like flipping through the pages of a book. Icons look rather nice, they can be moved about to your liking, and re-ordered. I can't complain on the UI really, except one nagging bit I can't seem to get over. You cannot make folders and organize Apps/Icons (you can if you jailbreak, which I have, but that's a whole other review). As silly as that sounds, it's a big mistake in my eyes. Call it OCD, but having stuff tuck away in folders and categorized is a big must for me, especially if your a Symbian user. So brownie points deducted right there, it's smartphone, come on Apple! Besides that one hiccup, getting things done and navigating is seamless and intuitive. Just get used to having 5 or more pages of apps if you are an app junkie.
Core Functions
Sending/Receiving text messages are quick and nice, but as we all know by now, no MMS. Steve Jobs should be punched dead in his face for that one. Web browsing is hands down THE BEST on any mobile I have ever got my grubby hands on to play with or own, PERIOD. That alone will keep alot of mobile surfer's addicted to this mobile by itself seriously. Wifi is nice to quickly surf/check emails/IM/etc if your not in a 3G area. Music and Videos are above par compared to other mobiles, it's an iPod Touch, that pretty much sums that up. GPS is nice with Google Maps, although I really miss Garmin on the N95, but it still gets the job done. Bluetooth only supports a headset, not stereo output, no file transfer (again BOO Apple, jeez!) So some basic features most have come to think as default features aren't on the iPhone 3G, you either adapt or move on to another mobile. You can't have apps running in the background, that's so 80's and Apple you know your wrong for that one too.
Conclusion
I would have to say the iPhone is worth owning, even with it's limitations and short comings. The interface alone is something other mobiles could take notes from. There are times where I do miss my N95 alot, but I still don't have it in me to get rid of the iPhone either. If your looking for a Music/Video/Web Browsing mobile, and the rest is trivial, the iPhone is a must. If your needing a more tried and true smartphone, I would suggest you research it before you take the leap. (For those willing to Jailbreak, then it's a whole other device in some respects so, keep that in mind to.)
Pros: Best Mobile Browser, Music/Videos are Outstanding, Ease Of Use, Huge Bright Screen, Sexy Looking, TouchScreen Interface, Solid Call Quality, Easy Syncing With iTunes, Just Plain Fun To Use
Cons: No MMS, No Stereo BT, No Multi-Tasking, No File Transfer Over BT, No Folders
